Today’s video is about mastering temperature for growing systems, commercial horticulture and best growing temperatures. M. S. Karla Garcia discusses temperature, one of the many variables that need to keep under control for the ideal growing environment. We're going to level up our understanding of a very important variable in growing systems, so let's learn about temperature, starting with 'what is temperature?' Temperature is the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or an object. Heat is energy that can be transferred from an object to another. Which variables are affecting plant temperature or are involved to determine plant temperature? We can speak about radiation, sensible heat, or metabolic heat. Let's start with radiation, which is the heat transferred by photons transporting energy from one object to another. There are two types of radiation important for growing systems; solar radiation, that is also called short wave radiation, and radiation from earth objects, also called long wave radiation. Sensible heat is the heat transferred by temperature difference, and there are two important definitions here. We can speak about conduction and convection. Conduction is the heat transferred through materials in growing systems. It's important to know heat transfer. For example, glazing material. This will help you to know how quickly your greenhouse can lose heat - something that you can manipulate in high or low temperature conditions. On the other hand, convection is the heat transfer by the movement of liquid or gas. This includes fan ventilation - a very important aspect to manage in growing systems. When we think about best temperature for growing systems, the recommendation will vary depending on what you might want to grow. In general, for most vegetables a "climate zone 7" is the highest recommended zones to grow them - because it's cool enough (below 90 degrees during daylight hours). In professional horticulture, they recommend a temperature of 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit or 21-22 Celsius. This allows produce to maintain flavor profiles and keep nutrient levels high. The best nighttime temperature is 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit or 12-15 Celsius. In agriculture, the crops can be destroyed by frost. You need to think about the weather forecast in order to decide on the best days for outdoor gardening depending on how many days of frost you want to endure. If you follow good growing practices, like pruning and thinning and fertilizing, you can keep your yield pretty high. It is important to note that different plants grow best under different temperatures. Always find out what your plant's best temperature for planting is and mimic those conditions. Ultimately, the climate and growing conditions that plant originally came from may not exist in your region of residence or it is just too expensive to get them here. In this case you should try and find suitable substitutes, making conditions as close to the original environment as possible.
