MEDIATION SKILLS - THE POWER OF USING OPEN QUESTIONS TO SUPPORT CONFLICT RESOLUTION.

The Power of Using Open Questions to Support Conflict Resolution This video outlines the ways in which the use of open questions help in conversations and relationships that have become ‘stuck’ in an unresolved conflict and help to ‘open up’ understanding of self and others and support creativity in response to the conflict. It also shows how closed questions fail to do this because they only come from one perspective, that of the questioner, and so restrict the conversation to consideration of just one perspective. As a consequence this will often lead to the conversation becoming stuck and a battle of opinions occurs instead of collaboration. This can, in turn, lead to incivility within discussions rather than respectful, creative dialogue. Open questions support psychological safety as they do not have the effect of 'directing' a discussion towards a yes/no answer to the questioner's agenda but opens up a discussion to invite in perspectives that may differ from that of the questioner.
