A normal citizen is called a Prime Minister when she or he occupies that seat. River water continuously changes, but it retains its name because of the riverbed. We take the water from the river and call it the Ganga because we honour the water for following the sacred riverbed coursed by the river for countless years. Similarly, when we do a commendable job, we are recognized for following the path laid by the seers of the past and coursed by countless great achievers. In fact, all recognitions we receive are not for this body but for the glorious path. Like the riverbed, we have many channels that serve as conduits for energy flow. There are three main channels called nadis: Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. Nadi means energy channel. Leftist energy flows through the ida nadi, while rightist energy flows through the pingala. The centrist energy flows through the sushumna nadi. We are constantly swayed by leftist or rightist emotions. The ida energy is also known as feminine energy—heart-centric, emotional, and unreliable. The pingala energy is masculine—head-centric, rational, and lacking empathy. Like the seven knobs on a veena string instrument for tuning the strings, along the central nadi sushumna, we have seven chakras. Tuning and aligning the chakras help harmonize the ida and pingala nadis, allowing energy to flow through the unbiased sushumna nadi. The lowest chakra along the sushumna nadi, in the tailbone region, is called Muladhara. This chakra is connected to the earth element in the body. More than half the body weight comes from the earth element, and because of this, this center has a lock called Brahma Granthi (granthi means knot). Brahma means heavy. This centre has to be unlocked for the energy to flow upward. In the sacral region, the Svadhistana chakra controls the water element. The water element accounts for nearly 50% of body weight and is vital for the distribution of nutrients. This center has a lock called Vishnu Granthi and it is difficult to unlock without intense efforts. When unlocked the energy start flowing upward. Vishnu means that which pervades all over the body. Behind the naval chakra is the Manipura. Manipura means "one that shines." One shines in life when the fire element is strong. This is the seat of our ego. The fire element purifies the body, and when the body gets cold, it starts to stink. This center has a lock called Rudra Granthi and this has to be unlocked to travel further. Like fire burns, with too much ego, one is tormented. Behind the heart center is the anahata chakra, which is connected to the air element. Just as air purifies the environment, the air element gives sanctity to the body. This is the headquarters and Yogis contemplate on the indweller "Vasudeva" here to tune all chakras. This center sustains the yogis’ spiritual journey. Behind the vocal cords is another tuning center called Vishuddha chakra, which is connected to space. This center combats poison or negativity entering the body, and the presiding deity here is Shiva. The next center along the sushumna nadi is the Ajna chakra. This is the place of creativity and intuition. The creator, Brahma, brings in creativity by residing here. The sushumna nadi culminates in the Sahasrara chakra. The purpose of life is realized by elevating to this chakra. The three chakras below anahata—Manipura, Svadhisthana, and Muladhara—constantly try to pull us down. The down-flowing energy must be balanced by upward-flowing energy using the Vishuddha, Aajna, and Sahasrara chakras. Tuning occurs in the anahata chakra. Anahata means effortless tuning. Like in music, there are seven notes: sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, and ni. The central tuning is done by ma, which means madhyama or central. The prana or Hanuman is therefore called madhyama prana. By residing in the heart center, He tunes all chakras. By channeling our prana through the sushumna nadi, we allow energy to flow along the path laid by the seers of the past. In doing so, we fulfill our obligations to divine beings, rishis, our ancestors, and future generations. These obligations are known as deva runa, rishi runa, acharya runa, pitru runa, manava runa, bhuta runa and bhu runa. Without discharging these obligations, one risks becoming trapped in leftist or rightist energy channels for lives to come.
