WEBINAR DESCRIPTION: In this webinar, Dr. Manuel Montero-Odasso, Canadian researcher and first author on the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management for Older Adults, provides an overview of this newly published global initiative. The objectives of this webinar are: 1. To review methodology of the creation of the world falls guidelines for management and prevention 2. To present a falls risk stratification algorithm based on current evidence 3. To peruse what is new in these guidelines compared with previous guidelines 4. To present key messages and key recommendations PRESENTER: Manuel Montero-Odasso (MD, PhD, FRCPC, AGSF, FGSA) was trained as an internist, geriatrician and clinician-scientist. He is currently Full Professor and Faculty Scholar at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and Director of the Gait & Brain Lab (www.gaitandbrain.com) at Parkwood Institute. Dr. Montero-Odasso serves as vice-president of the Canadian Geriatrics Society, and Chair of the Global Guidelines for Falls in Older Adults initiative (https://worldfallsguidelines.com). He also serves in the CIHR Board for the Institute of Aging and for the CIHR Anti-Racism Advisory Committee. He is Associate Editor for the Journal of Gerontology Medical Sciences, Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the Canadian Geriatrics Journal, and BMC Geriatrics (https://bmcgeriatr.biomedcentral.com/). He has extensive clinical, teaching and research expertise in the care for older adults that are vulnerable to falls and cognitive impairment. More specifically, he has been principal and co-investigator of more than 35 research grants in the field of falls, cognition, gait and mobility performance and on the development of prediction models for dementia incidence. He is member of the executive and team leader of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) where he is co-Principal Investigator in the Canadian Therapeutic Platform for Multidomain Interventions to Prevent Dementia (CAN-Thumbs-UP). In CCNA, he is leading multi-domain lifestyle interventions clinical trials (Synergic Trial - http://www.synergictrial.com/), to delay dementia in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment by using personalized medicine. He has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is (co)editor / (co)author of over 20 books and book chapters He has received several national and international accolades including the American Geriatrics Society New Investigator Award, the Schulich Clinician Scientist Award, the Premier of Ontario Excellence Research Award, and the CIHR New Investigator Award. In 2019, he was inducted as one of the Top 10 Hispanic Canadians for his contribution in Medicine and Science.
