Michael Avenatti Before Trump & Stormy Daniels: Fraudulent Lawyer Testifies in 2015

Before Michael Avenatti became a cable TV news darling in 2018 while suing Donald Trump on behalf of Stormy Daniels, he was a plaintiff's attorney in Newport Beach, California, battling a former co-counsel over $5.4 million in attorney fees from a $39 million lawsuit settlement. Here's the first part of a deposition he gave in April 2015. Avenatti stopped responding to filings in this case in 2018 and ended up defaulting out of it, then he unsuccessfully tried to participate in the 2022 trial via federal prison. His former co-counsel, Robert Stoll, sued their former clients, accusing them of conspiring with Avenatti to stiff him out of his $5.4 million attorney fee. The jury sided with the clients, clearing them of wrongdoing and declaring Avenatti a “liar” in interviews with lawyers and legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff in the courthouse hallway. Orange County Superior Court Judge Walter Schwarm then entered a $21.5 million default judgment against Avenatti, though Stoll and his lawyer, Jaems Keathley, have said they know it likely will never be paid. Avenatti is in federal prison for defrauding Daniels out of payments for her tell-all book, extorting Nike and defrauding clients in California out of $10+ million. He's at the Terminal Island federal prison near Long Beach, California, with a release date of Nov. 18, 2035. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his Nike extortion convictions in August.
