While Allen was in the Marines, his crew chief was killed in a training exercise. This took a toll on Allen, who started drinking heavily in an attempt to cope. Back at home, he continued to use alcohol and began using drugs, which caused him to get into trouble. Treatment for depression and substance use, including therapy and medication, helped Allen become sober and feel better.
