Teddy Roderman - Sunny (1967)

Awesome trombone-led cover of this Bobby Hebb classic, arranged by Rob McConnell. This comes from Teddy Roderman's debut solo album. Enjoy! Teddy Roderman was a Canadian trombonist, arranger and orchestra leader from Toronto, born on March 21st, 1924. He grew up in the Toronto neighborhood of Trinity-Bellwoods (bounded on the east by Bathurst Street, on the north by College Street, on the south by Queen Street West, and by Dovercourt Road on the west). Teddy got into music young and early on studied with Harry Hawe who was the first trombonist in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (under Sir Ernest MacMillan). The pair became very close with Harry remarking that Teddy (along with fellow student Murray Ginsberg) were the "apple of his eye", he had immense pride in their talent which he helped nurture. Harry left his trombone to Teddy when he passed away (possibly 1956 at the age of 64, provided this is the correct Hawe). Teddy had his first professional audition at the famed Palais Royale (conductor/band leader unknown & date/year unknown). He was soon playing all over Toronto in famous dance bands. He was part of the Modernaires during 1940-1942 Teddy also played in the Armed Forces Entertainment Unit during the World War II under band leader/conductor Bob Farnon, providing entertainment for the troops. This band then went to Korea during the Korean War for the same purpose, with Teddy as lead trombonist. When they came back, the CBC was becoming big, branching out from radio into television and recording music for records. The men who had been playing big band charts for years (in Canada and abroad) took over most of the session work there. Born at the right time, every session had horns and Teddy was on everything; he played everything and with everyone. Teddy was a first-call session player from the mid-1950's onwards. Stravinsky loved him, so did Rob McConnell and Phil Nimmons, among others. His credits are long and varied, but his main gig was the Toronto big band circuit: Lucio Agostini, Jack Kane, Johnny Burt, Jimmy Dale, Chicho Valle, Rob McConnel's Boss Brass (he was a band member for many years), Phil Nimmons, Guido Basso, Howard Cable, Jerry Toth, Hagood Hardy, etc. During the mid-to-late 1970's, Teddy was forced to retire due to cancer and decided to travel down south to Florida with his sailboat to live out the remainder of his days. He died there in September of 1980 and has left behind him a vast legacy. His son Hap [Eric] Roderman has been an active member of te Canadian music scen for a number of decades (including a few years prior to the passing of his father). Hap was a founding member of Canadian Rock band Rough Trade and was their bassist from 1973 through 1977. Later, he performed with Mike McKenna Slidewinder band, among other things.
