2996 'Victor' returns to the West Somerset to celebrate 50 years since the reopening of the railway!

A great and memorable day today celebrating the 50th anniversary of the reopening of the West Somerset Railway! The line was earmarked for closure during the beaching cuts of the 1960s, but Somerset County Council brought it to lease in 1976. Following the Christmas shutdown, today was the first operating day of the 2026 season, and 50 years to the day that the first train operated out of Minehead in 1976, and to celebrate this milestone half century, one of the original stalwarts of the line returned. Visiting from the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Bagnall 2996 ‘Victor’ made a brilliant site back on its old stomping ground, departing bang on 10am with a recreation of the original reopening train heading for Blue Anchor. We start at Minehead station where there were alot of activities going on to celebrate, with pannier 6435 dressed as 6412 'Flockton Flyer' (another stalwart of the original days of preservation) a live band, and a ceremony bringing together many volunteers including some of the original pioneers from the first days of operation. Along the line all the stations were busy, with the WSR Mogul in action looking resplendent in it's newly applied BR lined black livery, and Hymek D7017, 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' and the DMU were also all in action along the line. It was great to see lots of familiar faces at through the day, all soaking up the atmosphere. A true testament how far the railway has come from humble beginnings to being Britain’s longes heritage railway, and it just what can be achieved in preservation, and how far this line has come.
