While Kathleen, was recovering from complications from blocked arteries in her lungs and bleeding in the brain, her windpipe collapsed, causing severe breathing problems. To help her breathe, physicians performed a tracheotomy, a surgically created hole through the front of her neck and into her windpipe (trachea). A “trach tube” provided an air passage for her. Kathleen turned to University Hospitals to see if more could be done. Unfortunately, the breakdown of her windpipe was so severe that the usual procedures did not apply. Instead, Dr. Nicole Maronian and Dr. Chad Zender used an innovative procedure to repair Kathleen's trachea - grafting cartilage from her ears, implanting it into her wrist for six weeks and then using it to reconstruct her windpipe. Now Kathleen no longer needs a tube in her neck to breathe and is back to living an active lifestyle. For more on our our Voice and Swallowing Center, visit http://ow.ly/B6cA4.
