By: Valeria Handobe/Finna Kahili Patients temporarily accommodated at the Covid-19 facility at the Windhoek Central Hospital have raised concerns about the condition of the tent, claiming it is hot, uncomfortable, and unsafe. About 54 patients have been relocated to a tent at Central Hospital due to ongoing renovations at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital. This facility was erected during the Covid-19 pandemic as a temporary ward at the Windhoek Central Hospital, with space for 70 patients. Speaking on behalf of her sick mother, Cecilia Nguvauva said the facility is simply an open tent that lacks privacy. Nguvauva added that due to the hot weather conditions, the facility is not suitable for her mother’s health. Nguvauva’s mother suffers from epilepsy, high blood pressure as well as heart problems. “Apparently she can’t survive because of the heat, it’s very very warm inside here, there is no aircon. There's no privacy, it's open and there are no curtains here to cover her, she is just like that. And it’s very very hot for her because she is epileptic, and she is having heart problems," narrated Nguvauva. Other patients at the facility were not willing to share their sentiments with NewsonOne, but were also unhappy with the conditions. In response to concerns expressed by patients, the executive director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ben Nangombe, stated that although the ministry recognises that conditions may not always be ideal, they are working to improve the hot conditions by installing coolers in the facility. “It is true that being a temporary structure the conditions are not particularly ideal, but we are working to improve the situation, we are in [the] process of procuring the water coolers in order to provide a cooler MBS temperature in the facility and that is going to help with the situation,” says Nangombe. Apart from the Covid-19 field hospital, additional structures have been transformed into hospital wards, including the old nurses’ house, the old TB hospital, and the old Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) building. Moreover, Nangombe stated that the patients will return to Katutura Hospital after the renovation, which will take up to two to three months. This comes after the Ministry of Works and Transport availed N$40 million for the hospital's renovation.
