The story of Tay Rodriguez, and her mother's mission for justice, exposes a troubling gap in CT's criminal justice system: victims left in vegetative states receive less legal protection than those who die. Tay was the kind of kid who did everything on her own, until February 2023. She's now confined to a bed following a car accident, with her mother, Aneisha, as her full-time caregiver. We told Tay and Aneisha's story through intimate storytelling, showcasing a mother's transformation from parent, to nurse/advocate. We fought to obtain exclusive body camera footage, after initially being denied, to show exactly what the driver of the car did or didn't do, in his own words. Despite Tay's permanent vegetative state, the driver only faces assault charges, with no minimum mandatory sentence. Tay's mother thinks that's not enough. We explored why prosecutors had no stronger charges available. Following our report, a state senator has proposed legislation to close this gap.
