English Idioms | The lights are on, but nobody is home

TRANSCRIPT Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday! Let me tell you a story. The other day my whole family went out and we came home quite late. When we came to our house, we saw that all the lights in our house were on, but we were all in the car. It's a funny feeling if you ask me! Then we realized that when we left there was no electricity, so we probably by accident left all the lights on without realizing it. It reminded me of a funny expression that I would like to share with you today. First, watch this clip. (The lights are on, but nobody is home) The idiom "the lights are on, but nobody is home" is a humorous expression that describes somebody who is either stupid or is not paying attention. It is unusual for a house to be fully lit when nobody is home, so that's why it describes a person who seems to be totally functional but is not.
