In the late 1800s, northern Wisconsin was one of the most remote regions in the Midwest—an immense wilderness of pine, hardwood, and winding rivers. Few roads reached this far north. Settlements were small, scattered, and isolated. This piece is the third episode in From Fur to Farming, a series tracing the evolution of Price County, Wisconsin from the early 1800s into the mid 20th century. Produced by Mike Rice for the “Keep Ogema History Alive” Facebook group, the series offers short, engaging narratives designed to help new generations discover their local history in a fun and accessible way.
