The Kruger National Park was first established by the President of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger, in 1898. Realizing that the Lowveld animals needed to be protected, the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was set aside for restricted hunting in 1884. In 1882, the 57-year-old Paul Kruger was elected president of Transvaal. He left for England in 1883 to revise the Pretoria Convention of 1881, an agreement that was reached between the Boers and the British that ended the first Anglo Boer War. Paul Kruger acquired many allies in Europe during this time. In Germany, he attended an imperial banquet at which he was presented to the Emperor, Wilhelm I Naturally, Paul Kruger is, himself, memorialized at the Park, both with the Kruger Monument (at the Kruger Gate), and the Kruger memorial tablet. The latter is to commemorate the foundation of Kruger Park and reads: 'This tablet was erected by the National Park Board of Trustees to commemorate the institution of National Parks into the Union. Sabie Game Reserve proclaimed by President Kruger in 1898 Paul Kruger moved to Clarens in Switzerland where he stayed for the last six months of his life and died on 14 July 1904.
