Emeritus Board Member and former Executive Director of the ERC Rabbi Bruce Kahn offers his thoughts on the ADA's 30th anniversary. Transcript: By itself the ADA, you could say, is pretty spectacular. You could also say it's meaningless, because once it came into being it then took mountains of education and outreach and training and monitoring and testing and negotiating and conciliation discussions and even when absolutely necessary taking legal action to uphold it. To get justice for all those Americans with disabilities discriminated against even with the ADA in place. But because there is an ADA and because there is an Equal Rights Center and because there is a Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs that has outstanding relationships with law firms all over town... Because of all that, starting with that there is an ADA, then each of these circumstances, each of these horrors can be addressed, remedies found, remedies pursued, changes made, repetitions reduced. Passing the law was step one thirty years ago. Implementing, complying, following the law, bringing it to the fullest blessing that it was meant to produce... Those are the next steps, the constant steps. There is no resting. There are no givens when it comes to civil rights compliance. We've got to have the laws and we've got to have those who will do their best to see to it that all the good that's supposed to result from these laws - that makes us better - comes to pass. I have great hope that that indeed will be the case.
