In this video we compare the blazingly fast CachyOS with openSUSE Aeon. While on the Aeon side we test both the performance of all the games running via flatpak and natively. Each game was benchmarked 3 times without screen recording. Then the avg. fps was calculated over the 3 benchmarks and finally across all avg. fps results it was calculated how much faster / slower in percentage each operating system was under the given circumstances. ⭐️ Games tested: ➡️ Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation (GPU / CPU) ➡️ Borderlands 3 ➡️ The Calisto Protocol ➡️ Horizon: Zero Dawn ➡️ Returnal ➡️ Shadow of the Tomb Raider ⭐️ Content 0:00 Specs 0:18 Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation - CPU Focused 3:22 Ashes - CPU - Results 3:29 Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation - GPU Focused 6:35 Ashes - GPU - Results 6:41 Borderlands 3 8:30 Borderlands 3 - Results 8:37 The Calisto Protocol 9:21 The Calisto Protocol - Results 9:28 Horizon: Zero Dawn 12:30 Horizon: Zero Dawn - Results 12:36 Returnal 14:38 Returnal - Results 14:45 Shadow of the Tomb Raider 14:45 Shadow of the Tomb Raider 17:42 Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Results 17:49 System Performance ⭐️ Specs ➡️ CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D ➡️ GPU: nVidia GeForce RTX 3080 ➡️ RAM: 16GB DDR-5 4800 ➡️ Resolution: 2560x1440 ➡️ Board: GigaByte B650 GAMING X AX V2 ➡️ openSUSE Aeon ➡️ Kernel: 6.9.1-1-default ➡️ nVidia Driver: 555.42.02 ➡️ Gnome 46.1 (Wayland) ➡️ CachyOS ➡️ Kernel: 6.9.1-4-cachyos ➡️ nVidia Driver: 555.42.02 ➡️ Plasma 6 (Wayland) ⭐️ Conclusion This benchmark revealed that CachyOS and openSUSE Aeon might have done similar performance improvements to their base OS and at least in gaming seem to deliver on-par performance with most of the result being in a margin of error. While with flatpak Aeon was the slowest it was also the fasted with the native Steam client and all games not running inside the flatpak sandbox. But it is worth noting that flatpak did not had any noticeable performance penalties, except for Horizon: Zero Dawn where it was ~20% slower than with out the sandbox. After all CachyOS performed 1.25 percent better than openSUSE Aeon with flatpak. While CachyOS was about 2.88 slower than openSUSE Aeon without flatpak runtime. Considering flatpaks are the default way of running software on Aeon you wouldn't loose much performance after all. Or you just run Steam via Distobox as I did in this benchmark using openSUSE Tumlbeweed as the container OS. Which is what Aeon is based on. Also I'd like to note that all OSes where run in their base configuration with nVidia drivers added on top. No special tweaks where made in favor of openSUSE Aeon or CachyOS. Both system ship at least with x86_v3 optimized packaged. While CachyOS even delivers x86_v4 optimized packages. To sum all things up it is safe to say that both distributions deliver stellar performance in gaming.
