Basil Rathbone has a most compelling reading voice, near-perfect for recording Edgar Allan Poe stories. Many people know Rathbone best as the actor who played Sherlock Holmes in 14 movies between 1939 & 1946. Poe first published "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" in 1845. A school I attended 30+ years ago had in their music library a vinyl LP of Rathbone reading Poe stories. The LP contained this story among others. I enjoyed listening to the album in the library listening room occasionally. I couldn't find the recording when searching online a few years back, but yesterday was pleased to find & listen to it for the first time in 30 years! There are other renditions of the story at YT read by other readers, but Rathbone's, to my ears, may be best of the bunch. His voice & reading style add something to a fine Poe tale. It turns out Rathbone recorded (in the 1960s?It's hard to find out the years they were recorded) not one, but three Poe record albums containing a total of 15 Poe stories & poems. H.P. Lovecraft's tale "Cool Air" is reportedly partly derived from the plot of Poe's "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar", & this seems likely.
