A massive night at Langwith Road as Shirebrook Town hosted West Bridgford in the United Counties League Division One, with both sides locked in a huge battle near the bottom of the table. Coming into this one, Shirebrook sat 18th and West Bridgford 17th with Bridgford having games in hand but a home win would see Shirebrook leapfrog their rivals. Proper six-pointer. Before kick-off, I caught up with Shirebrook’s Kian Tansley to talk about the importance of tonight’s game, the recent form, and the need to keep this winning run going as the season enters a crucial phase. On the pitch, it was West Bridgford who started the brighter of the two, seeing more of the ball early on. But as the half wore on, Shirebrook grew into the contest and began to look more dangerous going forward. Then on 22 minutes, fortune finally smiled on the hosts. A deflected ball fell kindly into the path of Joe Godfrey inside the box. He showed great strength to shrug off the defence before calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner to give Shirebrook a vital 1-0 lead. From there, Shirebrook took control of the game, looking composed and confident — but it remained just 1-0 at the break. Three minutes into the second half, the Langwith Road crowd were sent into dreamland. A long ball forward found Joe Godfrey again, and once more he made no mistake, doubling his tally and giving Shirebrook a 2-0 lead! That second goal seemed to knock the wind out of West Bridgford, with Shirebrook now firmly in control. They looked the sharper, more organised side and limited their visitors to very little in response. It finished 2-0 to Shirebrook — a huge win in the context of the league table and one that lifts them above West Bridgford. Massive three points and another big step in the right direction!
