Going in Circles – A Dramatic Piano Duet for Early Beginners

Going in Circles is a short piece I’ve written to show what’s possible very early on at the piano. Michael is playing the student part in this video. At this stage, the technical demands are deliberately modest: one position change, pedal changes every four bars, and nothing that wouldn’t be accessible after a couple of lessons or once a complete beginner has learned the first few notes of reading. What interests me is the result. Despite the simplicity under the fingers, the sound world is far bigger than most people expect from a beginner. Strong contrasts, real dynamics, and a sense of drama that feels musical rather than instructional. It is also theatrical where I run round the back of the student to play first the treble and then the bass. It’s not just for show. It creates a texture and weight of sound that helps beginners experience something they wouldn’t normally associate with their level. Although Going in Circles isn’t yet in the Hey Presto! piano method book, it is already covered inside the Adult Piano Beginners course, which is why it’s been appearing in lessons before print.
