Title: The Alien Ocean Over the American West Link Video: • The Alien Ocean Over the American West About This Episode 🌎 Did you know Wyoming was once a prehistoric ocean? Explore the Sundance Sea, a shallow, turquoise marine environment that covered the American West 160 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Discover the tectonic geology that formed this epeiric sea and the deadly marine reptiles, like the Ophthalmosaurus, that hunted exactly where modern cowboys ride today. Chapters ⏰ 1. THE INTRO We begin in the modern American West. We feel the dry heat and see the dust. We utilize a "Ghost Layering" visual technique—superimposing the transparency of water over the desert. We establish the paradox: this desert was once a tropical paradise. 2. The Great Incursion We pull back to space to see a strange North America. The continent is warping. We explain the Geological Determinism: Tectonic plates to the west are crumpling, depressing the crust. The Arctic Ocean pours southward, flooding the lowlands. We explore the physics of this "Epeiric Sea"—shallow, warm, and bathed in unceasing sunlight. The atmosphere is heavy with humidity, a stark contrast to the modern arid climate. 3. The Sunlit Shallows Because the water is shallow, life explodes. We focus on the "floor" of the sea—carpets of Gryphaea (giant oysters) and forests of Crinoids. We introduce the hunters: The Belemnites (squid-like swarms) and the apex predators, the Ichthyosaurs (specifically Ophthalmosaurus with its massive eyes). We narrate a hunt sequence where the geography (shallow sandbanks vs. deep channels) dictates the survival of the prey. We frame the Ichthyosaur not as a monster, but as a master of this specific hydro-dynamic environment. 4. The Rising West The Earth moves again. To the west, the ancestral Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains begin to rise (The Nevadan/Sevier Orogeny). Rivers choke the clear sea with sand and mud. The turquoise waters turn murky and brown. The sea is forced to retreat (regress) northward. We watch the ecosystem collapse as the salinity changes and the water vanishes, leaving vast mudflats. 5. THE FINAL The mud hardens into the green shale and sandstone of the Sundance Formation. Immediately on top of it, the famous Morrison Formation (home of Allosaurus and Stegosaurus) is laid down. We conclude by returning to the modern hiker finding a "Devil’s Toenail" oyster shell in the dry grass—a tangible echo of the ocean that vanished.
