21 graduates proudly accepted their certificates during the Graduation Day of UVU Bio’s Introduction to Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Skills Programme, in partnership with GIZ South Africa. The special day celebrated the graduate’s tireless effort and unwavering dedication, marking their transition from student to professional. Hosted at UVU Africa’s Head Office in Cape Town, the event brought together industry leaders, educators, and peers to reflect on the achievements of the graduating cohort. It was a day filled with pride, purpose, and possibility when 21 aspiring scientists received standing ovations when they were awarded with their certificates. The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Dr. Uraisha Magan, UVU Bio’s Skills Development Manager, who reminded attendees about the important role these young graduates will play in shaping Africa’s biotech future. Graduates received insightful advice from Tobi Mzobe representing the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). He reminded graduates that their careers now contribute to a growing network of certified scientists across Africa. During the celebratory event, Johan Blankenberg the Training & Development Practitioner from Fine Chemical Corporation encouraged graduates to remain curious and continue growing in the fast-paced biotech industry. His message echoed the spirit of lifelong learning that underpins UVU Bio’s approach to skills development. The heart of the event, however, belonged to the graduates. In their testimonials, they delivered powerful reflections on the challenges they overcame and the skills they gained. Their words painted a vivid picture of growth, transformation, and community; themes that defined their time at UVU Bio. The day concluded with a networking session, allowing graduates to engage with professionals and mentors. The Introduction to Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Skills Programme is in partnership with GIZ South Africa, Lesotho & eSwatini. The project Vaccines for Africa: Roll-out and production in South Africa (SAVax) ensures access to vaccines for all persons living in South Africa and strengthens local vaccine manufacturing and vaccine distribution. The programme is specifically designed for matriculants and graduates with a keen interest in science, or individuals contemplating a career shift towards the sciences. The carefully curated programme is a structured blend of in-person training at UVU Bio's campus in Cape Town and is designed to facilitate a smooth transition into the sector. The graduates learnt about vaccine development and production, biological agents, metabolites, and pharmaceutically active ingredients. They gained invaluable hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, acquiring vital skills and knowledge essential for this growing field. Beyond technical aspects, the programme also incorporates a crucial "job-critical skills module," focusing on self-awareness, workplace exposure, effective communication, interview techniques, and goal setting. Upon successful completion, graduates receive a certificate endorsed by UVU Bio experts, further validating their preparedness for the evolving biotechnology landscape. The programme also ensures that each candidate receives an internship for two months. UVU Bio is actively shaping Africa's bioeconomy by empowering young people with vital skills and opportunities. Funders and investors are invited to join UVU Bio’s transformative journey that is creating tangible outcomes through job creation, innovation, and sustainable development.
