THE SONGBIRD: French soprano Lila Dufy studied vocal performance at the Université de Montréal and the Juilliard School, where she trained with Edith Wiens. Roles have included Tytania, Despina, Eurydice, Belinda, Le Feu (Bordeaux), Queen of the Night (Chicago), Xenia (Toulouse and Paris), and Dircé (Paris and Montpellier). THE MUSIC: "Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots," K.35 is a sacred musical work composed by Mozart in 1767 when he was 11 years old, and performed in Salzburg. Only the first part of the work was composed by Mozart; the second and third parts, performed on different evenings, were written by Michael Haydn and Anton Adlgasser -- however, only Mozart's music has survived. There are three soprano roles (Justice, Mercy, and Worldliness). Justice (Gerechtigkeit) sings this formal yet buoyant aria instructing a half-hearted Christian to wake up and work, as he will be judged by God.
