Apple's AR/VR Headset coming in 2022, Car in 2025‽ Its a Mark Gurman Special! First up - the Mixed Reality headset - which I think may be called Apple Vision (though I'd love to see iSight be the name for this or the Apple Glasses) according to Gurmey will be landing with us in Q4 of next year - ie October to December. And stuff doesn't generally get announced in December, so probably by the first half of November. This is NOT Apple Glass, we're talking full eye cover VR style headset, it seems that Apple is using dual micro OLED 4K displays from Sony, one for each eye and an M1 equivalent processor, with a second processor on board to deal with power management and other gubbins. There are conflicting reports as to whether this will be a standalone device or need a Mac or iPhone to set up, but assuming the M1 level processor on board it doesn't seem that these would be offloading any processing, so standalone would seem to make sense. The report saying it would need to be paired with another device came via The Information who have a fantastic 90%+ track record for accuracy, though it was a while longer ago so it's feasible that this has simply changed in the mean time. It will be interesting to see what Apple's approach to AR and VR in a headset is. Right now there are no companies on the planet that can make a technology mainstream in the way that Apple can. 5G was still fairly niche until it came to the iPhone 12, prompting faster rollout from carriers. Len Adams • 2 days ago #iCaveAnswers what do you think the screen interface on the apple mr headset will be like? Honestly, its really hard to tell. There are similarities across Apple's other product lines with even the Mac getting the Launchpad Grid layout of apps eventually. How the headset will transition from it's home page or desktop layout into apps will be interesting. Will it be something to wear only while in active use like sitting down at your Mac or something more passive like wearing an Apple Watch and interacting with the world without worrying about it? It seems more likely that the later Apple Glass would be that role with the Apple Vision headset (yes, I'm sticking with that name) being closer to the active interaction of a Mac. Perhaps you'll have a 360 degree workspace so you can simply turn to what you want to interact with. Its very difficult to know until we see it - and that could be as soon as WWDC in June of 2022, with the full roll out and sale being in the fourth quarter, similar to the Apple Silicon roll out. Developers will get a development kit option soon after the conference, just like the A12Z equipped Mac mini DTKs, followed by the consumer devices shipping in time for the holidays. I'd expect Apple to have a good deal of frameworks in place to make development quick for those wanting to get on board from the start. Apple Car Looks set to be around 4 years away from announcement and its quite possible that the announcement will be along with Pre-Orders, not sales, very much like when Tesla announces their cars a year or two ahead of shipments - this would allow Apple to make their reveal ahead of both Mass production and on the road testing. It appears that Apple has bought an existing proving ground test track, though public road testing will be lengthy and vital ahead of the launch of their pure self driving vehicles. With Kevin Lynch at the wheel-free helm it seems that the project is firing on all… electric motors, but there's still a LONG way to go before we see any real hardware I think. I just hope it doesn't become that stand alone Apple TV set that the whole community was so excited about a few years back! iCaveAnswers changes - Comment answers too! Committed to answering every comment still! Len Adams • 2 days ago (edited) #iCaveAnswers do you think the future of Apple TV is uncertain? Also asked about Touch ID on an Apple TV Remote Marcin Kowalczyk #icaveanswers #fakeORReal just how likely is a "dual M1x" (yes I have activated "max evasion mode") in the "pro" imac variant? or is it just fallacy and we're getting just single "high power die" (like in the laptops) in the iMac?
