Letter from the creator: Regarding the torture scenes - What we saw in Afghanistan confused us daily. We watched our Afghan Army and Afghan Police brothers keep chai boys in their patrol bases. We watched them do drugs on base, and I’ve heard stories of ANA and ANP torturing Afghan prisoners who were supposedly Taliban. (Never witnessed it. I was once offered the opportunity to torture a prisoner but respectfully declined. I’ll explain that one later.) I never understood the hypocrisy of our policies in Afghanistan, but the pain that our hypocrisy caused me will always bring me to my darkest comedy. This line represents the stupidity of the Afghan war perfectly. “I can stick my d**k in the a** of a child, but I can’t stick barbed wire up a druglord's a**?” Regarding the confession scenes - You’ll be happy and disappointed to know that all the confessions to chaps were based on true stories. Which makes you wonder, how do good men get to the point where all this stuff is not only normal, but hilarious? It reinforces the point we made in episode 1 of Let’s Talk about the War, which is that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, or how you were raised. When you’re in the trenches of a nasty war, you’re gonna turn into a fucking ANIMAL. It just be like that sometimes.
