Nikon D1 - 20th Anniversary Unboxing

The digital camera revolution began in 1999 with the Nikon D1, 20 years later Nikon still uses the parts they got right. Unboxing the Nikon D1 20 years after lauch is the perfect anniversary to commemorate the iconic camera's launch. I review the controls and specs and show the ways this camera is the same as modern DSLR cameras in a lot of ways. The Nikon D1 was a baseline for all Nikon cameras since to be built off of. 20 years later they still look and operate much in the same way. In the Nikon D1 the specs didn't age nearly as well as the design. The 2.7 megapixel CCD (before CMOS sensors) doesn't even use the same sRGB color scale newer cameras use, instead using the outdated NTSC color space. Maxing out at 4.5 shots per second was great for the time, but now leaves much to be desired. This was a $5000 professional camera that wasn't even full frame. The menu system was very basic and needed a lookup sheet to know what you were doing, but Nikon fixed this in the D2. It does beat most modern DSLR cameras with max shutter speed. The D1 maxes out at 1/16000s where most newer cameras max out at 1/8000s. It was really interesting feeling the differences between this and my new Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera. The D1 and Z6 were first generation cameras in a whole new realm of photography, and it makes me excited to see what Nikon will do in the next 20 years.
