Corneal Replacement, corneal transplant, and Keratoplasty. Approximately 50,000 cornea transplants are performed, in the United States each year. The cornea, is the eye’s clear outermost surface, at the front of the eye, playing a critical role, in being able to focus your vision. A cornea transplant, is a procedure that replaces diseased, or scarred corneal tissue, with corneal tissue from a donor. Candidates usually qualify for this procedure if they experience any of the following conditions: Scarring of cornea, hereditary conditions, corneal disease, thinning of cornea, corneal burns from chemicals, swelling of the cornea, or complications from a previous eye surgery. There are two types, of corneal replacement surgeries. The first, is the traditional corneal transplat surgery, also called penetrating keratoplasty. Which is Used for those who require, a full thickness section to be replaced. The second, is called an Endothelial keratoplasty, for those only requiring selective replacement of corneal tissue. Cornea transplant procedures have a high success rate, however there are small risks that can occur, such as rejection of the donor cornea.
