Music by Joe Knowlton (from demos for A Hell of a Life) In this raw footage, Popcorn drives through Hemphill and takes it in. He thought he might not ever return again in his lifetime, and to the best of my knowledge, he never did. Most of the families he knew growing up there were all gone. “They didn’t move out, they died out,” he said earlier. By that time, most of the properties there were summer homes built by “Florida people.” We left Hemphill by Jonathan Creek and returned to Maggie Valley. Again, not a lot going on here, but underneath it there is a palpable sense of the tremendous transformations in the region in the twentieth century and a glimpse of a vibrant, deeply-rooted part of the mountain population (the part that is in fact most emblematic of Appalachian culture) diminishing in numbers.
