Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) was the son of the court-physician of the magistrate of Brandenburg. Already at a very early age Händel showed great skill as an organ player. Although his father liked to see his son becoming a lawyer, the young Händel followed his passion and became a violinist at the opera in Hamburg. It was here that his first compositions, the opera "Almira" and "Nero" were composed. His activities as a composer and performing musician were noticed by the Italian nobleman Giovanni Gaston de Medici, who during that time, visited Hamburg and who invited Händel to Italy. An offer Händel immediately accepted. This was of a great importance for Händel who now had the opportunity to meet all the great Italian composers of his time. He was celebrated as ´il caro Sassone´ and enjoyed great popularity as an organ- and harpsichord virtuoso in Italy. It is likely that during this visit Händel heard the mandolino as an accompanying instrument to singers in Italian operas. Interestingly he re-discovered this combination much later in 1747, to use the mandolino in the opening aria by Cleopatra "Hark! He strikes the golden harp" in his oratorio "Alexander Balus". After being nearly for four years in Italy, Händel returned to his homeland where, at the court of Hanover, he was appointed to one of the most important functions in Germany. At that time Händel made several journeys to England where he was elected in 1719 to become the director of the Royal Academy of Music in London, an opera house that was just established. Here again Händel's success was prolonged, for more than twenty years he succeeded in creating the best opera productions, which brought him fame all over Europe. The Suite by Georg Friedrich Händel performed here on YouTube by the Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra Het CONSORT is a compilation of 4 pieces arranged for Mandolin Orchestra of Händel's harpsichord music based on an earlier setting for mandolin orchestra by the German mandolin pioneer Konrad Wölki. All the movements show Händel's remarkable polyphonic and wonderful melodic style. Especially known, in solo instrumental as well as in orchestral versions, is the famous theme of the Sarabande to which Händel added two beautiful variations. The Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT plays solely on Roman instruments of the Mandolin family as there are the 1st and 2nd mandolin, the mandola and the mandoloncello. All the instruments are made by Luigi Embergher (1856-1943) or his direct successors like Domenico & Giannino Cerrone and Pascuale Pecoraro. Besides the mandoloncello, modern Spanish guitars and a chitarrone moderno (a huge guitar kind that is only played pizzicato) are used for the lower voices in the music that is performed by this orchestra. To achieve the best sound the plectrum played instruments are played with the long two pointed Roman plectrum and strung with Bronze round wound CONSORT strings made on the orchestra's request by the German Lenzner/Fisoma string makers company.
