I decided to try locum tenens to supplement income. I’m in a fixed income situation with my current job, which is a steady job and I enjoy working there, however there’s some lost earning potential that I can’t really recoup without doing something like locum tenens. Because of that I looked into working as a locums physician during some time when I have time off so that I can sort of supplement my income and maybe gain a little bit of that lost earning potential back for myself. For me, as a subspecialist my scope of what I see in Otolaryngology is pretty narrow on a day to day basis and my subspecialty is kind of a niche area so when I go on a locum’s assignment it’s as a general Otolaryngologist so I’m seeing a larger, kind of wider scope of practice and maintaining a skillset that I learned when I was a resident and I have but maybe haven’t tapped into in a while. It is a great way to make extra money so if you are in a job already and you have some time that you’re able to use to go away and supplement your income you can utilize that as a way to sort of get paid for your time that you have, if you have downtime or vacation time, like for me.
