IT- EN IT - La Cala del Leone è un'insenatura del lungomare di Livorno, situata fra Calignaia e il promontorio Torre del Romito, dove sorge l'imponente castello che fu proprietà di Sidney Sonnino e dei suoi eredi. Il paesaggio e la natura suggestiva fanno sì che molti visitatori vi si avventurino, soprattutto in estate. Il nome deriva da Leone De Renzis Sonnino, nipote di Sidney Sonnino, che nel 1922 ne aveva ereditato i beni a condizione di assumere il doppio cognome. Il castello Sonnino si erge su un promontorio a picco sul mare proprio sopra la suddetta cala a pochi chilometri dalla città di Livorno, nei pressi della frazione di Quercianella, in località Romito. La costruzione del castello risale alla fine dell'Ottocento, quando il barone Sidney Sonnino decise di installarvi la propria residenza. L'area designata era occupata da un fortilizio cinquecentesco, realizzato dai Medici sui resti di una precedente fortificazione d'origine remota e facente parte di un complesso sistema per la difesa della costa (si vedano le voci Torri costiere della provincia di Livorno e Torri costiere del Granducato di Toscana). EN - Cala del Leone is an inlet on the seafront of Livorno, located between Calignaia and the Torre del Romito promontory, where the imposing castle stands which was owned by Sidney Sonnino and his heirs. The landscape and suggestive nature mean that many visitors venture there, especially in summer. The name derives from Leone De Renzis Sonnino, nephew of Sidney Sonnino, who in 1922 inherited his assets on the condition of assuming the double surname. The Sonnino castle stands on a promontory overlooking the sea right above the aforementioned cove a few kilometers from the city of Livorno, near the hamlet of Quercianella, in the Romito area. The construction of the castle dates back to the end of the nineteenth century, when Baron Sidney Sonnino decided to install his residence there. The designated area was occupied by a sixteenth-century fortress, built by the Medici on the remains of a previous fortification of remote origin and forming part of a complex system for the defense of the coast (see the entries Coastal towers of the province of Livorno and Coastal towers of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany).
