After the motorbike ride through the mountain roads of Munduk, Kiera and I hike down through the jungle toward Red Coral Waterfall in the Highlands of North Bali. The path is steep, green, and alive. It’s the kind of walk that invites conversation without forcing it. As we make our way down, we talk about life back in the UK, and the heavy year Kiera has lived through. She opens up about the loss of her horse, Jack, last year, followed not long after by the loss of her faithful dog and best friend, Buddy. Grief has a way of stacking itself, and sometimes you don’t realise how tired you are until you finally stop! Kiera needed a break from life… So when she reached out to me and asked where I was in the world, the decision was instant... Flights booked, bags packed, and suddenly she was on the other side of the world, walking through the jungle in Bali. This is a beautiful, honest hike, filled with real conversation, and the kind of moments that only seem to happen when you’re far from home, surrounded by nature, and allowed to breathe again. Sitting at an altitude of roughly 800–900 metres above sea level, Munduk feels noticeably fresher than the coast, with misty mornings and dense green all around. The waterfall is sometimes referred to as Munduk Waterfall, but the name Red Coral comes from the reddish rock formations that surround the cascade, which glow warmly when the sunlight hits them. From the roadside parking area, the walk down to the waterfall is a moderate jungle hike, taking around 20-30 minutes, with some steep sections along a well-worn path. Red Coral Waterfall is a single, powerful drop that crashes into a shallow splash pool below. While it’s not ideal for deep swimming, it’s an incredibly atmospheric spot, filled with the sound of falling water and jungle life. The surrounding trail passes through coffee and clove plantations, alongside thick tropical vegetation that gives the area its rich, layered greenery. The waterfall is part of a wider network of falls around Munduk, including Melanting, Golden Valley, and Labuhan Kebo, making this region one of the best places in Bali for slow, immersive waterfall exploration. Early mornings are often the most peaceful time to visit, before the paths become busier later in the day.
