SONGS OF FREEDOM: PROTEST MUSIC IN BLACK & WHITE BLACK FOLK - LEON BIBB One of the main goals of the Songs of Freedom project was to spotlight some of the unknown architects of protest music whom without their quieted contributions Black voices would never have been heard above hatred's din. I couldn't have made a more resonant, resounding and deserving choice when I decided to honor Leon Bibb with the inaugural episode in the documentary series. Bibb's career spanned 6 decades and included scene stealing and critically acclaimed performances on both Broadway and the silver screen, frequent appearances as a featured guest on the television, and lending his voice to the Civil Rights Movement, singing on the front lines, literally using his voice as a weapon against oppression. His refusal to denounce friends Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger led to his being banned, ultimately causing him to leave America altogether, expatriating to Vancouver, BC where his presence would become indelible as an artist, activist and educator , continuing the groundwork he laid in his former country in his adopted homeland, eventually becoming the recipient of the highest awards Canada can bestow on a citizen.
