In Ranashia, Thakurgaon, farmers are transforming their livelihoods by producing mustard oil under their own cooperative brand, selling directly to both wholesale and retail markets. The Ranashia ICM Krishan Krishani Somobay Samity Limited received USD 28,260 in funding from the APFP-FO4A program for its business plans focused on the production of mustard oil and maize. With this support, the cooperative added value to mustard through processing and distribution. The cooperative established its own mustard oil mill. Mustard supplied by members is processed, bottled, and marketed under the cooperative's brand. Cooperative members receive interest-free financial support, which they repay in mustard during the harvest season. The cooperative also provides technical assistance to help farmers improve productivity and achieve better yields. Local markets quickly embraced the pure, chemical-free mustard oil, strengthening farmers’ incomes and market position. In Dighon, Dinajpur, a similar transformation is taking place in the aromatic rice sector. The Dighon CIG Somobay Samity Limited has built a complete value chain for aromatic rice, from production and processing to packaging, branding, and marketing. The cooperative received USD 28,890 in funding from the APFP-FO4A program for its business plan on aromatic rice production, processing, packaging, and marketing. In addition to strengthening its processing and packaging facilities, the cooperative relocated its sales center to the commercial hub of Dinajpur’s rice industry to expand market access. The cooperative has secured orders from large institutions, including the Bangladesh Army’s CSD. The Asia-Pacific Farmers’ Program (APFP) – Farmers’ Organizations for Asia (FO4A) is implemented by the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC), with funding from the European Union (EU) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The program aims to strengthen the capacities of farmers’ organizations to provide economic services, advocate for enabling policies, and promote sustainable livelihoods for small-scale family farmers across Asia. APFP-FO4A is implemented in Bangladesh by the COAST Foundation.
