Damien and I were excited to explore the backcountry of Hyalite Canyon in Montana via ski. Our first objective was Hyalite Peak. We began before sunrise following a good skin trail through the valley. However, upon reaching the treeline we parted from the track and broke trail through open slopes in the basin. Ascending to the saddle was a delicate matter as it was guarded by a cornice and there was a good deal of sluffing on the left. We traversed on the right side of the slope and managed to bypass the cornice by climbing 50 feet above the saddle on the right. Damien and I left our skis on the saddle and walked the final 300 feet to the summit which was wind blown with exposed rock. The ski down was not the best turns we've experienced, but it was a wonderful winter mountaineering trip!
