Dr. Johnathan Michael Square. 1 November 2024. Dr Jonathan Michael Square will explore the pivotal role of enslaved individuals in the production and use of “negro cloth”, specifically “Lowell cloth,” a textile named after the city in Massachusetts where it was often manufactured. This textile not only highlights the prominence of Lowell as an example of American industrialization, but also underscores the pivotal role of fashion and textiles in understanding the experiences of enslaved people during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Dr. Jonathan Michael Square is the Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design. He has taught at Harvard University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Square recently curated the exhibition “Past Is Present: Black Artists Respond to the Complicated Histories of Slavery” and is preparing for another exhibition titled “Almost Unknown: Afric-American Picture Gallery.” He also leads a digital humanities project focusing on fashion and identity in slavery and freedom.
