What to do in Austin: Walking Barton Springs Road, Pool, Food, Music and Zilker Park

Join me on a walk through one of Austin's most vibrant areas: Barton Springs Road. This walk starts near South Lamar Blvd and heads west towards the famous Barton Springs Pool. Barton Springs Road is located south of Lady Bird Lake (also known as Town Lake or the Colorado River), in the western part of central Austin. This road serves as a major connection between downtown Austin and developments to the west, as well as major recreational areas. It has evolved significantly since the 1980s. Along this stretch, you'll discover what is known as "Restaurant Row". This area became a bustling traffic artery and drew many businesses, including restaurants and bars. It's a lively section of Austin with a variety of dining options and interesting places. You can find some early establishments like Chuy’s, which opened in 1982 in a former barbeque joint. Another historic spot is Green Mesquite BBQ, which arrived in 1988. The area today also features modern condos and apartments, showing its appeal as a place to live amidst the action. The walk also highlights Austin's music scene. Green Mesquite BBQ features an open mic night on Thursdays and live music on other nights. You can also find live jazz at Juliet Italian Kitchen. A newer place, Love Lamp Macha, is planning to start hosting live music as well. Barton Springs Road forms a bridge over the water flowing from the springs. This is a great spot to catch your first glimpse of the Austin skyline on this walk. The walk then takes us by Zilker Park, which is the location of the ACL music festival in the Fall. The destination of this walk is the Barton Springs Pool. It's considered one of the major things to do in Austin. Here, you can soak in fresh spring water in a paved setting with plenty of lawn space for relaxing and people-watching. The video captures what Barton Springs looks like during spring break, which might mean it's busier than a typical day. Ultimately I made it out to Songwriter Happy Hour at the Hole in the Wall. Good times.
