Travnik is a town, around 90 km northwest of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The town served as the administrative nerve center for Ottoman Viziers from 1697 to 1850. Did you know that Travnik was also the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andrić? Begin your tour in the Travnik castle. With nice views, the castle overlooks the entire city and the adjacent valley. Originally constructed before the Ottoman period, the castle received significant additions in the 14th and 15th centuries. As you walk through the stone gates, you're stepping on the same grounds where Viziers once stood. Even though the castle was partly damaged in conflicts, it remains a prominent landmark and popular spot for tourists. We get to the city center where we will see the small historical quarter known as Stari Grad. This is where we'll get to see examples of Ottoman architecture. The 18th-century Sulejmanija Mosque there, also called the Colored Mosque, stands out with its painted frescoes. Travnik may not be a bustling tourist hub. However, its combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty makes it a nice visit on the way to Sarajevo or towards Croatia.
