Vang Vieng is home to some of the best caves in Laos, many of which can be accessed just a short bike ride or walk from town. We started our day exploring Tham Chang Cave—the small entrance fee of 10,000 kip per person was well worth it, as most tourists didn’t venture too far in and we had many of the tunnels all to ourselves. Stalactites and stalagmites a plenty. For our second stop we hit Tham Nam Water Cave, perhaps our favorite stop in all of Vang Vieng. For a mere 10,000 kip per person, a local guide provides headlamps and guides you into a pitch-dark cave while floating on inner tubes! The water is moving, but only slightly, and the rope is plenty to pull you through. The full journey doesn’t take more than 20 minutes, but is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced! Laos spelunking at its finest. Finally we hit up Vang Vieng’s Blue Lagoon Number One, the first of several “Blue Lagoons” that sit at the base of the area’s limestone mountains. The semi-natural pool comes complete with rope swings, jump-off platforms, and pay-to-play waterslides and cabanas. The water is cold and murky, but watching visitors make a splash was well worth the trip out!
