3.8.2013 Performed by Ponte Orchestra & Ponte Singers Conducted by Stephen Lam Lik Hin Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall Ponte Orchestra Carmina Burana, composed in 1935-36, is one of the most frequently performed pieces of the classical repertoire. Meaning ‘Songs of Beuren', ‘Carmina Burana’ acts as a memento to the collection of the early 13th century songs and poems, and was discovered in Beuren in 1803. They were a mixture of German, Latin and medieval French, which cause great challenges to singers nowadays. The lyrics present a celebration of human emotions, nature, love and desire. To choose the best ones out of the great amount of this collection, Carl Orff joined hands with Michael Hofmann to pick 24 out of the original 1000 songs and published the ‘Scenic Cantata’. The cantata opens with the first song, ‘O Fortuna’, and is also the piece performed in this video. Beginning with a attentive and potent timpani attack, which is followed by chorus with the same energetic intensity — this song is indeed an accusation towards fate. The theme may sound hopeless, however, Carl Orff tried to give you a different picture. The following 23 songs, brings audience through different seasons of life: laughter, misery, love, gain and loss. Although the first and the last song, ‘O Fortuna’ symbolise the unbreakable power of fate — so what? we should still enjoy our life and live it with our own will. Carmina Burana is not only deep in its philosophy, but also requires mature singing technique. Many octaves and extremely high notes are found in the piece, in both soloists and chorus. You can easily sense the ambition of Carl Orff. As said by him, “Everything I have to written to date, and which you have, unfortunately, published, can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana, my collected works begin."
