Shillong’s Police Bazar tense following eviction drive

Khyndailad, popularly known as Police Bazar, witnessed high tension on Monday as officials from the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) carried out an eviction drive targeting unlicensed vendors. SMB teams checked for licenses, instructing those without them to pack up and vacate the area. The drive, which began at 9 am, saw several hawkers refusing to move, prompting police intervention to assist SMB officials. Some vendors lashed out at the authorities, leading to verbal spats, while a few female hawkers were seen weeping after being asked to vacate. Angela Rangad, leader of the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA), condemned the manner in which the drive was carried out, calling it illegal. She said the Association would not submit to forced evictions and demanded adherence to legal procedures. According to Rangad, hawkers and street vendors would only shift once the flaws identified by the Provisional Town Vending Committee (PTVC) were addressed.
