BlackSeaRC presents a nostalgic "Retro Review" featuring the Kyosho Double Dare 4WDS 1:10 scale radio-controlled car crusher/monster truck. On 21 September 1987, Tamiya launched the now iconic Clod Buster 4x4x4 monster truck (Tamiya kit number 58065). Soon after, Tamiya's main rival, Kyosho, launched a series of big-wheeled "car crushers" in an attempt to cash-in on the growing monster truck craze. The Double Dare RC assembly kit, part number 3106, was launched around 1988. It used a scale-realistic Nissan D21 Hardbody King Cab Pickup body on a monster truck style chassis. A simplified version of this chassis was first used on the 2WD "Big Brute" (1988, part no. 3105). Derivatives of the chassis were then subsequently also used for the "Hi-Rider Corvette" (1989, part no. 3107), the "Big Boss" (1989, part no. 3108) and the "USA-1" (1990, part no. 3165). The standard specification of the Double Dare included 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering, twin Kyosho LeMans Stock 05 motors, sealed front and rear gearbox modules with gear-type differentials, fully independent double-wishbone suspension with twin friction shocks at each wheel station, a fully-enclosed "dust protected" reinforced ABS plastic tub-style chassis that housed the radio equipment, Kyosho heavy-duty rotary mechanical speed controller, large directional chevron-pattern soft tyres and heavy-duty nylon wheels, polycarbonate body with various injection-moulded detail parts (some of which were chrome-plated). Provision to fit optional LED headlights and roof lights was also provided. I purchased and built this kit along with the separately required radio control equipment around 1989. I also bought some upgrade parts and additionally fabricated some homemade parts, in an attempt to improve performance and overcome some of the truck's many design flaws.
