We recently celebrated the inaugural lecture of Professor Angus Cameron. In his talk, 'Kinase families and friends,' Angus reflected on his career studying protein kinases and the people who supported him along the way. He shared stories from key moments of discovery and described how his professional and personal experiences eventually led him into cancer research. He also spoke about his enthusiasm for patient and public outreach and memorably demonstrated how kinases and phosphates work using some of his children's toys, to the delight of his family in the audience. Speaker biography After studying Biochemistry at The University of Bath, Professor Angus Cameron conducted his PhD studies on innate immune cell signalling at the University of Glasgow, under the supervision of Professor Janet Allen. Following a short Postdoctoral fellowship in Glasgow, Angus moved to the CRUK London Research Institute at Lincoln’s Inn Fields to study protein kinase regulation of cancer cell biology with Professor Peter Parker. He established his own research group at Barts Cancer Institute in 2013 focussing on the microenvironment of solid tumours, encompassing pancreatic, breast and colon cancers. Angus’s laboratory takes a multidisciplinary approach employing cell biology techniques, in vivo models, pathology and bioinformatics to explore cellular interactions in tumours and identify drug targets for translation. Angus is Director of Graduate studies for Barts Cancer Institute, overseeing the post-graduate research degree program and teaches on a variety of undergraduate courses, including tissue pathology and personalised medicine. He is an enthusiastic supporter of patient and public outreach, working with school students and cancer patients through various programs established at Barts Cancer Institute.
