Written specifically for the Yellow Submarine movie in May 1967, All Together Now is a classic McCartney-penned children's song, in the vein of Lennon's Yellow Submarine. Paul wrote the hook and verses, and John the "sail the ship, chop the tree" parts. The band recorded the song in a 6 hour session on May 12th 1967, a session led by Paul and Geoff Emerick as producers due to George Martin's absence. George Martin's absence somehow made the session more easy-going, as Emerick recalls : "Things were definitely more relaxed when George Martin wasn't around. There was always a certain protocol when he was at a session: we in the control room felt that we had to be on our best behavior, and even The Beatles seemed slightly constrained by his presence at times. When he wasn't there, we'd all let our hair down and have a bit of fun. There was just a different dynamic, and you can hear it...(the song was) a lot looser, a lot more up, than anything they'd recorded in quite a while. Lennon, in fact, made a comment at the start of the 'All Together Now' session to the effect of 'Well, now that the schoolmaster's out, we kids finally get a chance to play." Take 9 was chosen as the basic track, and the band, along with friends, overdubbed various percussion and vocals. One of these vocal overdubs was buried in the far left channel of the mix, but I managed to grab some of it out with AI at 14:13. The song was featured two times in the Yellow Submarine movie, most notably at the end during the only apparition of the Beatles themselves. Paul and John both said in interviews they were quite happy when it became a football chant in England after its release in 1969.
