Fan Nedd, rising to 2,175ft at its southern summit, is one of The Citizen Cairn's favourite Welsh mountains. Located between Fan Gyhirych and Fan Llia, within the wild expanse of Fforest Fawr, although not as unfrequented as it was some 30 years ago when I first ventured forth, it still offers everything I crave in the wild uplands of Wales... including the remains of two Bronze Age cairns. Here, I visit that upon the northern 'prow' of the mountain; the other, placed upon a lower eastern shelf at SN9182 1887, can easily be seen via a simple detour... if starting from Cwm Llia. One can also take in the iconic Maen Llia and associated monuments while you're at it! It is possible to park a couple of cars where the single track road traversing Cwm Llia begins a 'significant' descent to the Senni Valley, this according easy access to the natural line of ascent to the southwest. The view foreshortened, the climb is not as easy as appearances might initially suggest. But hey. Maybe you're still young and fit? In due course, a large marker cairn is attained upon the northern edge of the mountain. Tune your prehistoric radar and the substantial, embedded ancient footprint will become apparent. The views are breathtaking, sweeping from Y Mynydd Du (Black Mountain) to the west... and Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du (Brecon Beacons) to the east... all - well, most - of these summits crowned by their own monuments. Yeah, take your time and absorb the vibe....
