We were thrilled to have Ed Yong as a keynote speaker for #MillionsMissing as we are big fans of his pandemic coverage. And we are not alone in that. Yong has collected multiple prestigious awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, for his pandemic coverage.* Ed is a science journalist for The Atlantic who cares “deeply about accurate and nuanced reporting, clear and vivid storytelling, and social equality.” Yong shares at #MillionsMissing, “I’m enormously proud of these pieces but what I want to emphasize is that none of them would have been possible had the community not spoken up for itself. I would not have understood what was happening or ordering connections between ME and other chronic illnesses had I not read Sarah’s** book beforehand, Her words. Your words fueled my words. Your work allowed me to do my work in so many different ways.” Yong also tells how someone had retweeted Jen Brea into his timeline (most likely Sarah Ramey- go Sarah for all you did not just this!) and that is how he became connected to this community and why from his very first piece on Long COVID he explicitly made the connection with ME. So those retweets matter, everyone! Ed gave shout-outs Fiona Lowenstein for their early writing in the pandemic, to Elisa Perego and Amy Watson for the terms Long COVID and Long Haulers, as well as to Patient Led Research Collaborative for their research showing he really is dialed into this Long COVID community and listening to those with lived experience. Ed finally shares that, “All of my work draws from the efforts of people who have had such little energy to spare and were heroically using that little energy to advocate for themselves and to tell their own stories. Really all I did was to listen to them and to believe them.” It really is that simple and yet unfortunately it is not that common. Thank you to Ed for leading the way all who come into our contact with our community should react- listen and believe. #MEAction has worked hard to reach out to the press and to the general public and we are working hard every day to get the right information out to all who need to hear it. See some examples of our press work here: https://www.meaction.net/?s=press We can only continue and grow these efforts with your help! Please donate and support our #MillionsMissing Giving Campaign. https://act.meaction.net/page/13161/d... *“For his coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, he won the Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism; the George Polk Award for science reporting; the Victor Cohn Prize for medical science reporting, the Neil and Susan Sheehan Award for investigative journalism; the John P. McGovern Award from the American Medical Writers’ Association; and the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award for in-depth reporting.” **Sarah Ramey wrote the book The Lady’s Handbook for Her Mysterious Illness.
