For Caribbean American Heritage Month, WCAPS is happy to share an intimate discussion featuring WCAPS’ Pipeline Alumna, De’Omini Daniely and one of Antigua’s Extraordinary 7, Queen of Carnival contestant #2, Desrie Markham. Together, they delve into the themes of peace, unity, and community. “As a Caribbean American, I believe that events like Carnival are very important because they symbolize Caribbean unity, culture, and community. They are empowering ways to embrace our heritage while building cross cultural connections. Carnival connects to peace and security by educating people about the importance of cultural conservation, promoting community building, and fostering a sense of belonging for all,” says De’Omini Daniely regarding the opportunity to sit with current Carnival Queen Contestant, Desrie Markham. The link between home and heritage flows through the conversation as they discuss peace, advocacy, and community engagement. De’Omini Daniely is an alumna of the Spring 2024 WCAPS Pipeline Fellowship Program and her Caribbean ancestry connects her to the St. James and St. Andrew Parishes in Jamaica. Ms. Desrie Markham, is an Attorney-at-Law who was called to the Antiguan and Barbudan Bar in December 2022. She is currently employed as a Crown Counsel II within the Attorney General’s Chambers. She has a passion for Criminal Law and Criminology, Civil Litigation and has interests in Family Law and International Climate Change Law and Policy.
