Cults & Isolation: The Movies That Inspired Bugsnax

It’s pretty easy to look at Bugsnax and pick out its video game influences: things like Pokemon Snap and Animal Crossing are pretty apparent. But movies had just as much influence on the snack-catching game. In particular, elements of Apocalypse Now, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Wicker Man, and Aliens can be seen in it. By taking a closer look at the motifs in these movies, we can learn more about the design of Bugsnax’s world and story. Three key themes can be seen: cult leaders, isolation, and permanent changes. All are present in those four films, and all are present in Bugsnax as well. Be warned: there are spoilers for both the game and those movies in this video.
