Niccola Piccinni, Overture to Atys

This is a video version of an audio file I uploaded some time ago. Piccinni sets a model of heroic E flat major that inspired Beethoven -- in the Eroica symphony and the Emperor Concerto. Haydn's treatment of E flat major is quite different. In fact each Haydn piano sonata in E flat approaches the key totally differently, each from one another. But the influence of this piece on Beethoven is clear. It is written in the French style -- a slow first part that is almost a flute concerto, and then a fugal second part. The violins compete with the massed woodwinds by playing triple stops. To make that not scratch, the bow arm moves circularly. But seeing it on the video, you can see that 20 violins aren't necessary to compete!
