(1 Apr 2000) English/Nat VOICED BY LOUISE BATES An abandoned newborn has beaten the odds in Kosovo. An American officer of the U-N police force found the baby boy by the side of a road, bleeding from his umbilical cord. The newborn was taken to an Italian military hospital and has now become a firm favourite with a contingent of Italian troops. Cases like these are extremely rare in Kosovo, where extended families usually step in to look after unwanted children. VOICE-OVER: 00:02 They're calling him "Lucky". 00:05 In this Italian military hospital west of Pristina, the newborn boy abandoned on the side of a road has become an instant celebrity. 00:14 He's alive thanks to the quick reactions of U-N officer Bill Burgstiner, who just happened to be passing when some villagers waved him down. 00:23 SOUNDBITE: (English) "We were flagged down by some people standing at a bus stop, and a language assistant told me that they had found a baby abandoned by the side of the road, wrapped up in a blanket. I went over and the baby was still alive, bleeding from the umbilical cord which had had been left untied. I immediately tied the umbilical cord up and wrapped the child in a warm, dry blanket, and made contact with the police department to get in touch with the Italian K-FOR field hospital." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Burgstiner 00:54 Burgstiner refuses to take any special credit for saving the baby's life, saying he was just in the right place at the right time. 01:02 But Italian hospital staff who treated the boy on his arrival, say that Lucky owes his life to the American officer. This doctor says Burgstiner's first aid skills were excellent. UPSOT SOUNDBITE 01:15 Where Lucky goes from here is yet to be decided. But already hospital staff are referring to Burgstiner as the child's godfather. 01:23 SOUNDBITE: (English) "That's fine with me. I'll take the baby home with me if they let me (laughs)." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Burgstiner 01:27 If the boy's parents eventually come forward, the hospital will most likely be obliged to hand him over. Either way though, Lucky's future now seems assured. 01:40 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
