The fate of a controversial national Erebus memorial in Auckland was hanging in the balance on Tuesday night, but the Waitematā Local Board has given the project the green light. Board members voted four in favour, three against, for the controversial memorial proposed for Dove-Meyer Robinson Park. It will recognise the country's worst peacetime disaster in 1979 when Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 people on board. The project has faced longstanding and vocal opposition from residents who live near the park - many say the park is too small and the proposed memorial too big. Jo Malcolm, whose family have lived in Parnell for many years, told the meeting it's about protecting the land. Reporter Jean Bell spoke to Lisa Owen before the decision was made.
